  • In the 1960s and 1970s, the artist Ed Ruscha created a series of small photo-conceptual artist’s books, among them Twentysix Gas Stations, Various Small Fires, Every Building on the Sunset Strip, Thirtyfour Parking Lots, Real Estate Opportunities, and A Few Palm Trees. Featuring mundane subjects photographed prosaically, with idiosyncratically deadpan titles, these “small books” were sought after, collected, and loved by Ruscha’s fans and fellow artists. Over the past thirty years, close to 100 other small books that appropriated or paid homage to Ruscha’s have appeared throughout the world. This book collects ninety-one of these projects, showcasing the cover and sample layouts from each along with a description of the work. It also includes selections from Ruscha’s books and an appendix listing all known Ruscha book tributes.

Spagnoli’s subject is the build-up to the First Gulf War, but we see these social and political events at best obliquely as Spagnoli’s version of history is primarily subjective and fragmentary. American Dreaming is the second of Spagnoli’s books in atrilogy about the personal experience of history, the first being Daguerreotypes.

    The philosopher Karl Popper called in 1945 for an open society “in which one can breathe and think freely, in which each person has a value, and in which the society exerts no unnecessary pressure on the individual”. In the 1960s and 1970s a new generation of artists began to replicate works of art in the form of artists’ books, magazines, newspapers, small multiple objects, postcards, graphic posters or audio cassettes. These were sold for a small fee or exchanged internationally with artist colleagues, disregarding all political frontiers, from Eastern Europe to Latin America. An international network was thus formed via the post, enabling artists to circumvent the censorship of their work. This was the genesis of so-called Mail Art. Everyone could participate, nobody was excluded. there were no juries and no censorship. A societal vision in accordance with that envisaged by Karl Popper was apparent in the dehierarchisation and the democratisation of art. The exhibition shows works from the archive of the Dutch artist Kees Francke, who would have celebrated his 65th birthday this year, supplemented by works from other archives that help to form a picture of the networks though which these artists were interconnected. Als kulturelle Untergrundinstitutionen in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren entstanden, übernahmen die aktiven Archive nicht nur die passive Rolle, die Erinnerung an künstlerische Praktiken zu bewahren, die für das offizielle Kunstsystem unsichtbar waren, sondern sie aktivierten diese Praktiken, speisten sie und gaben ihnen Rückmeldungen, indem sie als Knotenpunkte oder Kreuzungspunkte in einem ständigen kollektiven Austausch innerhalb der internationalen Netzwerke der Mail Art dienten. Die Archivinstitution selbst wurde so zu einer selbstreferentiellen künstlerischen Praxis, die performativ und konzeptionell ist, das Verhältnis zwischen künstlerischem Schaffen und der Schaffung von Wissen verändert und neue Wege des Denkens über, der Beschreibung und der Ausstellung von Kunst sowie der mit ihr verbundenen sozialen Prozesse fordert.
    Das Seminar betrachtet das aktive Archiv sowohl aus einem spezifischen Blickwinkel, indem es sich auf drei zentrale Fallstudien konzentriert - Galantais Archiv Artpool Art Research (enter), Ulises Carrions Other Books and So Archive (OBASA) und Guy Schraenens Archive for Small Press & Communication (A.S.P.C.) -, als auch aus einer breiteren Perspektive, indem es die konzeptionelle Kraft des Begriffs des "aktiven Archivs" selbst untersucht: Tatsächlich bietet dieser Begriff ein fruchtbares Modell für das Verständnis eines breiten Spektrums performativer und intermedialer Kunstpraktiken, die sich seit den 1960er Jahren entwickelten und im Kontext des Kalten Krieges, insbesondere unter autoritären Regimen sowohl kommunistischer als auch kapitalistischer Ideologien, eine Dimension des politischen Widerstands und Aktivismus erhielten.
    Dementsprechend eröffnet das Seminar, das aus einem gemeinsamen Forschungsprojekt von Artpool und OBASA hervorgegangen ist, natürlich auch für andere, ähnlich "aktive" Ansätze für Archive, kulturelle Praktiken und und kulturellen Praktiken und Institutionen, die in den internationalen Mail Art Netzwerken von den 1960er bis zu den 1980er Jahren.

  • Following the example of French and British railway companies, C.P. (Portuguese Railways) built houses and social facilities between 1910-20, to support its employees and their families. Key projects implemented during the first quarter of the twentieth century included the Boneca neighbourhood, for retired railway workers, and the Vila Verde neighbourhood, in the alignment of the Bairro Camões neighbourhood. The latter was built in 1926 designed by Cottinelli Telmo and Luís da Cunha. All these neighbourhoods are located in the city of Entroncamento. The city itself was created because of the railways. The station was the first dwelling - at the time a small tent (1862). This new venture provoked major migration from the interior of Portugal, of those who wanted to work for the Company. As a consequence, C.P. (Portuguese Railways) developed a plan, involving a series of ambitious social support structures, perhaps unique at the national level. The company built neighbourhoods for employees, a school, a supplies warehouse, an anti-tuberculosis dispensary that operated as a health centre and also encouraged the development of sporting activities. In parallel with technological evolution and development of railway activities, the workshop area was expanded, included reinforced staff training, which reached a peak when a training centre was built, that is today called FERNAVE, house in a huge building, built from scratch for these functions and which formerly housed the Instituto Superior de Transportes (Higher Transport Institute).

  • Vor 40 Jahren wurde Joseph Beuys Arbeit "zeige deine Wunde" zum ersten Mal in München ausgestellt. Die Installation, die heute als eine der bedeutendsten Werke zum Sammlungsbestand des Lenbachhauses gehört, wurde 1976 erstmals in dem heute als MaximiliansForum bekannten städtischen Kunstraum in der Unterführung der Maximilianstraße, Altstadtring in München gezeigt. Unter dem Motto "Zeige Deine Wunde 2016" sind Künstlerinnen und Künstler der jüngeren Generation eingeladen, in einer vierteiligen Ausstellungs- und Veranstaltungsreihe den Ort und diese für München wichtige Arbeit zu reflektieren. Die vom April bis Januar 2017 im MaximiliansForum gezeigten Präsentationen und Veranstaltungen der Reihe begeben sich auch auf die Spurensuche zum damaligen Entstehungsprozess, zu Auswirkungen auf den Kunstdiskurs und die Kunstvermittlung sowie auf den Einfluss auf die konzeptuelle Kunst bis hinein in die Akademie der Bildenden Künste.
    Zum Auftakt sind vom 21.04.-16.06.2016 unter dem Titel Die Markierung des Raumes zwei Installationen, von Susanne Pittroff Echo und Maximilian Erbacher WE BELIEVE LUXURY IS BEST SERVED IN SMALL QUANTITIES, zu sehen.

    Consider these facts. In Italy the right to worship, without discrimination, is enshrined within the constitution. There are 1.35 million Muslims in Italy and yet, officially, only eight mosques in the whole country. One consequence is that the Muslim population have accumulated a huge number of makeshift and temporary places of worship. These are housed in a variety of buildings including lock ups, garages, shops, warehouses and old factories. This shortage of places to worship is particularly acute in north east Italy – where the photographer Nicolò Degiorgis lives – home to many anti-Islamic campaigns headed by the right wing party Lega Nord. The dull images of the many and diverse buildings that house the makeshift mosques are printed on folded pages. You open up the gatefold to reveal the scenes inside the mosques, shot in full colour. The size of the gatherings varies, from large crowds who sometimes pray outside to a small room full to bursting, or to intimate groups of two or three Muslims. Degiorgis provides a fascinating glimpse of hidden world and leaves the conclusions about this project entirely in our own hands.
    In 2014 Hidden Islam was awarded the Gold Award - Deutscher Fotobuchpreis, First Book Award - Paris Photo/Aperture Foundation and Author Book Award - Les Rencontres des Arles.

    75 g/m² started as a black and white photocopy exhibition. The project was initiated by Maycec, a photographer, self-publisher and graphic designer who draws inspiration from alternative culture and her personal life. She is co-founder of Vesselroom Project and Atelier29. The first 75 g/m² exhibition took place in Berlin in 2014 with Maycec alongside Vonverhille and Damien Sayer whom both grew up in the suburbs of Paris. Vonverhille started in the graffiti scene in the 90s. He diversified his means of expression and explored photography and experimental electronic music. He now lives in Berlin where he founded Erratum galerie. Damien Sayer has photographed his family, friends and encounters over the course of five years. His small format pictures remain simple documentary pages, simple facts or portraits recorded on a sheet of paper. Alizee Lenox joined the exhibitions 75 g/m2 part II and part III. She is a poet DeepLy influenced by Pop Culture mostly because you cannot not be influenced by a soft machine that creates so many idols you can hate and worship at the same time. She is currently working on her first chapbook manuscript.

Hectographs, mimeographs, and offset printing not only allowed for the production of small, lowcost print runs but also promote a unique aesthetic: using wild mock-ups, »messianic amateurs« combined typescript aesthetics, handwriting, scribbled drawings, assemblages of collaged visuals, porn photos, snapshots, and comic
    strips. The typography consciously frees itself, in parallel to a liberalization of linguistic and visual forms of expression in the name of a new »sensibility«.
    This book (which appears in conjunction with an exhibition at the Weserburg in Bremen) is the first to present the underground and self-published works that came out of West Germany in such depth, while also showing the internationalcontext in which they emerged: not as an anecdotal history but as an attempt to tap into the aesthetic cosmos of a Do-It-Yourself rebellion, one that also challenges us to take a new look at the current boom in »independent publishing«, the risograph aesthetic, and so on.

    Anne-F Jacques and Tim Olive use handmade, idiosyncratic instrumentation to produce and amplify detailed sound textures, from fine-grained to coarse. They share a tactile, lo-tech approach to improvised sound composition, manipulating diverse objects and materials in conjunction with somewhat unpredictable audio pickup/amplification systems to create a music in turns serene and agitated, pellucid and dense, fluid and gritty. Jacques uses small electric motors and Olive employs magnetic pickups; both sources are modified, manipulated and amplified. The hands-on nature of their instrumentation results in performances which are both sonically captivating and visually intriguing.

    „I Hear a New World“ nannte der Produzent und Musiker Joe Meek in den 1950er-Jahren ein Studioalbum. Meek revolutionierte die Pop-Musik, indem er Regeln missachtete, Geräte um- und neubaute und machte mit Verzerrungen, „falschen“ Abspielgeschwindigkeiten und neu erfundenen Aufnahmetechniken seine Vorstellungen einer neuen Welt hörbar. Gustav Mesmer gestaltete seine Welt nach seinen Ideen (eines seiner Gedichte nannte er „Zum Weltbau“), baute neben futuristischen Flugrädern auch Instrumente und Sprechmaschinen.
    Die Veranstaltungsreihe präsentiert Künstler*innen, die ähnlich innovativ und respektlos mit Instrumenten und Technik umgehen: sie erfinden und bauen neu, hinterfragen Funktionalität und technische Perfektion – die Idee steht im Vordergrund. So entstehen neue Welten.
    Der kanadische Künstler Michael Dumontier nennt seine Klang-Trash-Installationen auch „a small world“. Bei Joe Meek war die neue Welt noch der Weltraum und andere Planeten, Gustav Mesmer hat sich als Architekt seiner eigenen Welt von konservativ-christlichen Zwängen befreit, später in der Free-Jazz-Szene der DDR, der Günter Baby Sommer entspringt, und der Punk- und DIY-Szene, in der Saya und Ueno von Spirit Fest und auch The Notwist ihre Anfänge hatten, bekam das Brechen vorgeblich festgeschriebener Regeln und das Selbermachen auch eine politische Dimension. ...
